First Algae-Fueled Car Crossing the Country

 

 

The first algae-fueled vehicle called the Algaeus has begun its drive across the country.  The car, a converted plug-in Prius outfitted with a nickel-metal hydride battery and filled with a blend of 5 percent algae and 95 percent gasoline from Sapphire Energy, set out from San Francisco yesterday and will take 10 days to make it to Washington, DC.

The group responsible for the Algaeus, the Veggie Van Organization, expects the car will only require 25 gallons of fuel to make the entire trip.

Yes, a 5 percent blend of algae doesn't exactly signal the start of an algae revolution, but it does mean that progress is being made on fuel with great potential and this road trip lets people see the progress in action.  The main point of the Algaeus is to show the ability of algae to be used in a standard engine.

The road trip isn't being made just to show off the algae car, but to also promote the film FUEL that discusses solutions for our dependence on foreign oil and opens on September 18th, the day the algae car will reach its destination.

Sapphire Energy plans to produce two million gallons of algae fuel per year for the next two years with hopes of it becoming cost-competitive in the next few years at $60 to $80 a barrel. The company intends to create a 10 percent algae blend for its future commercial products.  Sapphire is also producing one million gallons of algae-based jet fuel this year.

Evidence for Reincarnation

Dr. Stevenson has devoted the last forty years to the scientific documentation of pas life memories of children from all over the world.  He has over 3000 cases in his files.  Many people, including skeptics and scholars, agree that these cases offer the best evidence yet for reincarnation.

Forty years of research by Professor Ian Stevenson (University of Virginia) provides impressive evidence that each one of us is different from his/her physical body and is able to function independently of it. Stevenson has published dozens of carefully-researched cases (see bibliography) in which young children report verifiable details of what they claim were previous lives. The following is a typical case in terms of obscure and detailed information reported by the child. It is atypical in that the previous personality predicted his rebirth.

Obscure and Verifiable Details

In 1945 Victor Vincent, a resident of Sitka, Alaska, informed a young friend of his, Mrs. Chotkin, that he was to die soon and be reborn as her son. He expressed the desire that in his next life as her son he would not stutter as he did in this life. He pulled up his shirt and showed her a scar on his back that was the result of a surgical operation performed several years earlier. The small round holes of the stitches were clearly visible. He also showed her a scar on the right side of his nose (near the eye) that was the result of a surgical operation there. He informed her that in his next life as her son he would have the same marks on his body in the same places, and thereby she would be able to recognize him as Victor Vincent reborn.

A year later he died. Eighteen months thereafter Mrs. Chotkin gave birth to a boy she named Corliss. She told Stevenson that on the body of Corliss at the time of his birth were the same marks, in the same places, as those on the body of Victor Vincent. In 1962 Stevenson visited Alaska and described the mark on Corliss’s back: “It was heavily pigmented and raised. It extended about one inch in length and a quarter inch in width. Along its margins one could still easily discern several small round marks outside the main scar. Four of these on one side lined up like the stitch wounds of surgical operations” (Stevenson, 1974, p.260).

Eliminating Alternate Explanations

Critics claiming fraud by Mrs. Chotkin for monetary gain are silenced by Stevenson’s report that she gained no money from him or anyone else. The claim that she faked the case for notoriety is refuted by the fact that hardly anyone (including her own daughter) was aware that she believed Corliss was Victor Vincent reborn. The claim that she faked the birthmarks is hard to believe, since she was a simple housewife with no access to the sophisticated lab equipment required to fake birthmarks. In fact, it is doubtful that anyone in the world in 1962 would have been able to fake the birthmarks well enough to fool Stevenson (himself an M.D. and professor).

One day when Corliss’s mother was trying to get him to say his name, instead of saying the name “Corliss” he said “Don’t you know me? I’m Kahkody” (Stevenson, 1974, p.260). Kahkody was a nickname of Victor Vincent.

Corliss identified strongly with Victor Vincent and was able to spontaneously recognize a number of people that Victor Vincent had known. Stevenson (1974, p.261) said that when Corliss was two years old he recognized Victor Vincent’s son named William. Corliss saw him on the street and spontaneously said, “There is William, my son.”

About that same time Corliss also spontaneously recognized a stepdaughter of Victor Vincent’s. He saw her at the docks of Sitka and correctly said her name, Susie. At that time he was being pushed by his mother along the street in a carriage. Stevenson said that Corliss exhibited great excitement when he saw her, so much so that he was jumping up and down. He said, “There is my Susie.” Corliss also hugged her with great affection. Corliss recognized Susie before his mother had noticed her. Stevenson mentioned that Mrs. Chotkin did not go to the docks with the intention of meeting Susie. In a similar way, when Corliss was three years old he spontaneously recognized and Victor Vincent’s widow and called her by her correct name, Rose. He recognized her in a crowd of people before Mrs. Chotkin had seen her. Stevenson reported that Corliss also recognized a number of other people that Victor Vincent had known.

Stevenson (1974, p.261-262) wrote that Corliss was able to provide a detailed account of certain events that had occurred in the life of Victor Vincent. One day Corliss related an experience Vincent had had when he was out on a fishing trip. The engine of Vincent’s boat had broken and left him helpless in one of the many hazardous channels of southeastern Alaska. Vincent wanted to attract the attention of any ship that might be passing by, but he thought that most crews would not take much notice of an ordinary fisherman. It turns out that he happened to be a part-time worker for the Salvation Army, and he had with him a Salvation Army uniform. He put on this uniform and rowed in a small boat to attract the attention of a passing ship named the North Star. He asked some of the crew members to deliver a message for him. Mrs. Chotkin heard this story directly from Victor Vincent himself when he was alive. She was sure that Corliss had not heard the story from her or her husband before he told it to them.

On another occasion Mrs. Chotkin and Corliss were at the house that was previously owned by Mrs. Chotkin and her family during the life of Victor Vincent. Corliss pointed to a room in the house and said that he (as Vincent) and his wife had slept in this room when they visited the Chotkins. This statement is impressive since at the time Corliss was visiting the house, it had been reorganized and was being used for purposes other than an ordinary residential house. None of the rooms in it were recognizable as bedrooms. But the room that Corliss pointed to had in fact been occupied by Victor Vincent and his wife when they had visited the Chotkins.

The claim that Corliss acquired all this information by psychic power (and hence reincarnation is not required to explain the informational aspects of this and other similar cases) is refuted by the observation that Corliss was unable to provide such impressive information about anyone other than Victor Vincent. The same is true for the many other cases reported by Stevenson.

Mrs. Chotkin told Stevenson that certain of Corliss’s behavior patterns closely resembled those of Victor Vincent. She mentioned that Corliss combed his hair forward over his forehead in the same way that Vincent had done, although she had tried to train Corliss to comb his hair in exactly the opposite manner.

As mentioned earlier, Victor Vincent stuttered severely and told Mrs. Chotkin a year before his death that he hoped he would stutter less in his next life as her son. Corliss also stuttered severely when he was young, until he received speech therapy around the age of ten. Vincent was a very religious Christian. When Corliss was young, he expressed similar devoutness. Vincent was very fond of handling boats and living on the water. Corliss had the same interest. In fact, Corliss surprised his parents by repairing a boat engine without any training. Both Vincent and Corliss were left-handed.

Correlation Between Birthmarks and Wounds

Stevenson (1987, p.101) wrote that he had researched hundreds of cases in which a child claiming reincarnation had distinctive birthmarks supporting this claim, and in about thirty cases he had obtained independent corroboration (in the form of medical records or autopsies) of similar marks on the body of the previous personality. These are described in Stevenson (1997). There are many cases in which a child reported that he was violently murdered (usually by shooting or stabbing) in his previous life, and the child had on his body a birthmark of the same shape and in the same place as the fatal wound in his previous life. Stevenson wrote (1987, p.101): “Birthmarks and birth defects related to the previous personality seem to me to provide some of the strongest evidence in favor of reincarnation as the best interpretation for the cases. They are objectively observable (I have photographed several hundred of them), and for most of them the only serious alternative explanation that I can think of is a psychic force on the part of the baby’s mother that influences the body of the embryo or fetus within her. However, this explanation, which is itself almost as mind-stretching (for the average Westerner) as reincarnation, can be firmly excluded in about twelve cases in which the child’s mother and father had never heard of the identified previous personality until after the child’s birth.”

Those who want to eliminate the hypothesis of reincarnation and explain everything as psychic force on the part of the child must take into account the fact that the marks are present on the child’s body at the time of birth. This means that the child would have had to be able to wield this psychic force while in his mother’s womb, which is more consistent with the hypothesis of reincarnation than psychic force without reincarnation.

Functioning Without a Physical Body

Dr. Stevenson reported a number of cases in which the conscious self existed for days, weeks and even years without a physical body and acquired information by transcorporal senses. (Transcorporal senses refer to senses that are different from those of the physical body and able to function independently of it.) For example, a Thai boy named Bongkuch Promsin claimed that in his previous life he was a Laotian man named Chamrat who was stabbed to death (Stevenson, 1987, p.68). After the murder, the conscious self that had resided in the body of Chamrat remained in a discarnate state for seven years, staying near a bamboo tree in the vicinity of the murder. One rainy day the discarnate Chamrat saw Bongkuch’s father and accompanied him home on a bus. Bongkuch’s father later told Stevenson that he happened to visit Hua Tanon (the place where Chamrat was murdered) shortly before his wife became pregnant with Bongkuch. Bongkuch’s father said that the day he went to Hua Tanon was in fact a rainy day.

An Indian boy named Veer Singh said that after the death of his previous body (belonging to a man named Som Dutt) he, as a discarnate conscious self, remained near Som Dutt’s family and observed their activities. Veer Singh said that he accompanied members of this family who left the house at night and went out alone. Stevenson said that Som Dutt’s mother had a dream in which Som Dutt told her that he had accompanied his brother a number of times when his brother had surreptitiously left the house at night to attend local fairs. When this brother was asked, he admitted that he was in fact attending local fairs at night, but no one in the family knew about it until Som Dutt’s mother had this dream. Stevenson added that Veer Singh also knew about other private family affairs that took place after Som Dutt’s death and before Veer Singh was born, including the fact that the family bought a camel, that they were involved in a lawsuit, and that several children were born during this period (Stevenson, 1987, p.110).

The persons who reported seeing things in the discarnate state could not have been using physical eyes. Thus, the above evidence supports the hypothesis that the conscious self is inherently transcorporal and possesses transcorporal senses.

Reincarnation is a Natural Process That Happens to All of Us

The idea that reincarnation is a natural process that all conscious selves undergo when their physical bodies die is supported by Stevenson’s statements that it is easy to find persons who claim to remember a previous life in certain places such as West Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and the northwestern part of North America (Stevenson 1980, p.13; 1987, p.93). Stevenson said that in these places he has received so many reports of possible cases that he simply did not have enough time to investigate them all. It is important to note that cases of the reincarnation type are found not only in southeast Asia but all over the world.

Stevenson wrote, “Fortunately, many new cases are available, and as I mentioned in the General Introduction to this series, I should have no difficulty whatever in indicating places in several countries where an investigator can easily find more cases of this type than he could possibly study” (Stevenson, 1980, p.351).

Stevenson mentioned that he has also found and investigated many cases of the reincarnation type in the other parts of North America and Europe. The lesser frequency of reported cases in these countries is due to the fact that many parents ignore or suppress their children’s statements that would support such cases, and hence they can not come to the attention of investigators like Stevenson (Stevenson, 1987, p.93-94). Careful studies by other scientists have uncovered dozens of cases similar to those reported by Stevenson. See, for example, Pasricha (1990, 1992, 1998), Mills (1989, 1990), Haraldsson (1991, 1997), and Keil (1996).

One might raise the following objection: “If reincarnation is actually true, why don’t I or more people I know remember a previous life?” A reasonable answer is that the power to remember a previous life is a rare talent like Einstein’s mathematical talent or Mozart’s musical talent. The fact that I and my friends do not have these talents does not mean that no one has these talents. Obviously Einstein and Mozart were real historical persons. Another important consideration is that there are things which we know we went through (such as being in our mother’s womb) but which we have no memory of. To say that I was not in my mother’s womb because I don’t remember it is clearly fallacious logic.

Technical Remote Viewing is a highly structured and standardized technique that allows you to consistently obtain accurate information, on demand, using a rigorously applied set of protocols. It is a trained ability to acquire accurate direct knowledge of things and events - targets - distant in time or space, while conscious awareness remains totally "blind" to details about the target itself. It is a data collection skill. Like any other skill, practice is required to become proficient. The TRV techniques result in an accurate transfer of information from the viewer's unconscious mind into conscious awareness, before the aware, creative, and analytical part of the mind has time to distort, contaminate, or otherwise interfere with the data flow. The target information is then converted into words or sketches, using only a pen and plain white paper. During this process, the viewer becomes linked directly to the collective unconscious - also referred to as the Matrix. The process works whether the target is in the next room or on the other side of the world. This information can exist anywhere in time or at any point in the Universe, as mind exists outside of time and space.

        All humans have the innate potential to receive detailed information on a target, using only their minds. But throughout history, only a small number of exceptional natural psychics developed their ability to a point of repeatability and consistency. It was not until the late twentieth century when the U.S. intelligence community poured millions of research dollars into the area of psychic functioning that a true breakthrough was realized. In an effort to use psychics for intelligence gathering purposes, the Defense Intelligence Agency contracted Stanford Research Institute to develop a reliable technique that could be used to collect accurate information on distant targets. The outcome of this research was a set of protocols and a training program that allowed virtually anyone to be trained to perceive psychically derived information, while surpassing the accuracy of the best known natural psychics. For the first time, a remote viewer could learn how to consistently separate imagination from true target data and remain locked on to the target signal. Unlike earlier research involving "out-of-body experiences" and freestyle Extended Remote Viewing (ERV), the remote viewer worked fully conscious at a state of high attention. The protocols were designed to slowly bring the viewer to closer target contact, working from the general to the specific, collecting bits and pieces of data in a specific and structured manner, with all viewers following the same rigorously applied six stage process.

Remote Viewing as an Applied Military Intelligence Tool

The refinement and development of the process did not end in the laboratory. In the Defense Intelligence Agency's unit, these remote viewing procedures were tested against top secret and distant targets often involving life or death situations - a motivating factor which simply does not exist in the laboratory research environment. The work these viewers produced had to be accurate and they used it to save lives, find hostages and solve complex problems involving the security of the United States.

This resulted in improvements in the techniques and training regimen and brought great strides in perfecting the accuracy of the skill. It was now a highly accurate military intelligence collection and problem solving tool, applied by highly disciplined military intelligence officers. One of the training officers of the remote viewing unit formed a private corporation, in 1989, and the former presiding General of INSCOM (Intelligence Security Command) sat on the board of directors, to help usher this technology out of the confines of secrecy and into the private sector. That company is PSI TECH.

How does TRV work?

First, a target cue or name is formulated and assigned a set of eight random numbers, which serve to keep the process blind and act as a label for administrative purposes. The viewer only receives these numbers and then follows the stages of TRV structure, in order, working for usually forty five minutes in a single session. In the end, the viewer working alone or in concert with a team, almost always has an extremely accurate description of the target, including sketches and often the solution to a problem.

Where does the information come from?

Think of all of the information in the entire universe existing as patterns of information, at a single dimensional space somewhere. Think of a computer disk. Except this library of information is active. It isn't passive like a regular library or a random access memory disk. It's as if your personal unconscious mind is interfacing with a library that's talking to you. And the way that the books are stored, in this collective unconscious, is in the form of information patterns. Each of these patterns is unique for every person, every place, every thing and every event.

When Technical Remote Viewing, you are turning your unconscious mind toward these specific patterns of information that you or your tasker is interested in, in a consistent and very accurate manner, producing descriptions in terms of words, and sketches that fit this pattern - this target. That is essentially the way that the unconscious mind communicates data to conscious awareness, when your mind is trained in this skill.

        Properly creating a target cue is analogous to an internet search, or a library search for those of you who are unfamiliar with internet search engines. In a library, you fill out your library card, and you give it to the librarian, and if you're interested in, let's say Abraham Lincoln, the librarian comes back with several books, or tomes, on Abraham Lincoln. If you're interested in something that's more specific that only existed momentarily, then you might only get one book. If you conducted a library search or an internet search on something that was an abstract or general term like "medical cures," you'd get dozens of books. Because, in that case, you're dealing with a very general term that is associated with other abstract ideas, a problem for instance, that affects many different things. And so, for us, in our library search of what we call the Matrix, or the collective unconscious, this is a very unwieldy search term. However, if you select a specific disease as a search term, the results will be limited to that specific cure or treatment. So, using our model, that is essentially how the process works and how information is downloaded.

MORE than a year after an explosion of sparks, soot and frigid helium shut it down, the world's biggest and most expensive physics experiment, known as the Large Hadron Collider, is poised to start up again.

In December, if all goes well, protons will smash together in an underground racetrack outside Geneva in a search for forces and particles that reigned during the first trillionth of a second of the Big Bang.

Then it will be time to test one of the most bizarre and revolutionary theories in science - the notion that the troubled collider is being sabotaged by its own future.

A pair of distinguished Danish and Japanese physicists have suggested that the hypothesised Higgs boson, which is supposed to imbue elementary particles with matter and which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveller who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.

Holger Bech Nielsen, of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, and Masao Ninomiya, of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kyoto, put forward this idea in a series of papers posted on the physics website arXiv.org in the past 18 months in an attempt to explain why everything seems to be going wrong with the Large Hadron Collider, built by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).

This malign influence from the future, they argue, could explain why the US Superconducting Super Collider, also designed to find the Higgs, was cancelled in 1993 after billions of dollars had already been spent, an event so unlikely that Nielsen calls it an ''anti-miracle''.

''It must be our prediction that all Higgs-producing machines shall have bad luck,'' Professor Nielsen said.

Professors Nielsen and Ninomiya started laying out their case for doom in the first half of 2008. Later that year, after the CERN collider was turned on, a connection between two magnets vapourised, shutting down the collider for more than a year.

Professor Nielsen agreed that scepticism was in order. After all, most big science projects, including the Hubble Space Telescope, have had a period of seeming jinxed. At CERN, the beat goes on. Last weekend the French police arrested a particle physicist who works on one of the collider experiments, on suspicion of conspiracy with a North African wing of al-Qaeda.

Professors Nielsen and Ninomiya have proposed a kind of test: that CERN engage in a game of chance, a ''card-drawing'' exercise using perhaps a random-number generator, in order to discern bad luck from the future. If the outcome was sufficiently unlikely, say drawing the one spade in a deck with 100 million hearts, the machine would either not run at all, or only at low energies unlikely to find the Higgs.

Yes, it's crazy, and CERN is not about to mortgage its investment on a coin toss.

As Niels Bohr, Professor Nielsen's late countryman and one of the founders of quantum theory, once told a colleague: ''We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct.''

1) This invention relates to apparatus for the electrodynamic propulsion of bodies into space.


2) Machine for acceleration in a gravitational field. A machine comprising an electrically polarized body, and means for moving the body in one direction to accelerate electrons, thereby generating an accelerating force in another direction due to an interaction between the accelerated electrons and the gravitational field.


3) Apparatus and method for generating a time variant non-electromagnetic force field due to the dynamic interaction of relatively moving bodies and for transforming such force fields into energy for doing useful work.

The method of generating such time variant force fields including the steps of juxtaposing in field series relationship a stationary member of spin nuclei material, and a member capable of assuming relative motion with respect to said stationary member also characterized by spin nuclei material; initiating relative motion by rotation of said one member with respect to the other, which rotational motion may occur both about an axis within the plane of said other member and about an axis perpendicular thereto; whereby the rotational motion of said one member about the axis perpendicular to the plane of said other member results in the dual interaction of the angular momentum property of said one member with inertial space and also with respect to the angular momentum property of said other member, thereby resulting in a dynamic interaction field arising through gravitational coupling which dynamic interaction field is further characterized by its non-electromagnetic nature and its mass-proximity and relative motion dependency; the rotation of said one member about the axis within the plane of said other member further resulting in an undulation of the dynamic interaction field within said other member which in turn gives rise to a secondary time-variant gravitational field in the surrounding space.


4) This device is a brushless high-voltage electrical generator, requiring suitable means of input rotary torque, for purposes of producing a very-high-energy external electrodynamic field or continuous quasi-coherent DC corona or arc discharge of uniform current density which completely encloses the machine's conductive housing.

This housing is divided into distinct electrical sections and contains a flat conductive rotor which electrically links separate negative and positive housing sections and upon which a plurality of toroidal generating coils are rotatably mounted. Circular arrays of stationary permanent magnets are affixed within the housing which induce a constant DC voltage within said coils upon their rotation.

The primary voltage so-generated is electrostatically impressed across the rotor such that great quantities of electronic charge may be transported between the opposite polarity sections of the housing, in such a manner that a much higher secondary voltage is caused to appear across interposed neutral sections thereof, and the resulting external breakdown current once initiated is independent of the generating coils' ampacity. Ancillary mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic features may be attached upon or within the housing to aid in harnessing and controlling the useful effects associated with the external dynamic electric field produced by the device.


5) This invention relates to electrical apparatus and more particularly to an apparatus for utilizing electrical current and voltages for the production of forces for causing motion of the apparatus. I have discovered certain new and improved apparatus for producing thrust in response to the direct application of electrical potentials and currents.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved apparatus for producing thrust by means of applied electrical potentials. It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved apparatus for producing thrust in response to the application of electrical potentials and electrical currents.


6) This invention relates to an electrical device for producing thrust by the direct operation of electrical fields. I have discovered that a shaped electrical field may be employed to propel a device relative to its surroundings in a manner which is both novel and useful. Mechanical forces are created which move the device continuously in one direction while the masses making up the environment move in the opposite direction.

When the device is operated in a dielectric fluid medium, such as air, the forces of reaction appear to be present in that medium as well as on all solid material bodies making up the physical environment.
In a vacuum, the reaction forces appear on the solid environmental bodies, such as the walls of the vacuum chamber. The propelling force however is not reduced to zero when all environmental bodies are removed beyond the apparent effective range of the electrical field.


7) A dipolar force field propulsion system having a alternating electric field source for producing electromotive lines of force which extend in a first direction and which vary at a selected frequency and having an electric field strength of a predetermined magnitude, a source of an alternating magnetic field having magnetic lines of force which extend in a second direction which is at a predetermined angle to the first direction of the electromotive lines of force and which cross and intercept the electromotive line of force at a predetermined location defining a force field region and wherein the frequency of the alternating magnetic field substantially equal to the frequency of the alternating electric field and at a selected in phase angle therewith and wherein the magnetic field has a flux density which when multiplied times the selected frequency is less than a known characteristic field ionization potential limit; a source of neutral particles of matter having a selected dipole characteristic and having a known characteristic field ionization potential limit which is greater than the magnitude of the electric field and wherein the dipoles of the particles of matter are capable of being driven into cyclic rotation at the selected frequency by the electric field to produce a reactive thrust, a vaporizing stage which vaporizes said particles of matter into a gaseous state at a selected temperature, and a transporting system for transporting the vaporized particles of matter into the force field defined by the crossing electromotive lines of force and the magnetic lines of force.

8) My invention relates to electrokinetic apparatus, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for utilizing electrical potentials for the production of forces for the purpose of causing relative motion between a structure and the surrounding medium.


9) An electromagnetic energy propulsion engine system including a hollow housing having a front part and a rear end part of material transparent to the passage of electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic field generating solenoidal windings, having central axes parallel with the central axis of the engine and axially spaced from each other to provide a forward field generating winding and a rear field generating winding, a power source, a control computer, and a power pulse generator connected between the electromagnetic field generating windings and the power source and control computer.

The forward field generating winding generates a rearwardly directed magnetic field toward the rear wall parallel to the central axis, and the rear field generating winding produces a forwardly directed magnetic field opposing the rearwardly directed magnetic field of the forward field generating winding so that the rearwardly directed magnetic field repels forwardly directed pulses of the rear magnetic generating winding.

As the electrical current conduction in the rear field generating winding suddenly reduces, the continuing rearwardly directed magnetic field force transmits pulsating magnetic field energy produced by the rear field generating winding through the rear of the housing. The reaction to the rearwardly transmitted field energy produces a thrust propelling the engine and a vehicle in which it is mounted.


10) The present invention relates to conversion of energy, and in particular to the use of electrical potentials for producing forces to cause motion of a structure by direct operation of electric fields, thus providing a thrust sufficient for propelling a vehicle.

Which sounds as if companies are granting employees some sort of freedom: "Go on George, twenty years on the job is long enough, so git outta here. Have yourself a ball!"

By that measure, there have never been a more free people. Now benevolently relieved of their job responsibilities, millions are free to do almost anything they choose, go fishing -- or take up the banjo. At the moment 14 million Americans have been granted freedom, with another three or four million expected to be pardoned before the economy "levels out," meaning more people will lose their jobs, but at a slower rate. Of those 14 million liberated souls, six million are so free they can even take the family on a year-long round the world trip, if they so choose. They need no longer report in at the (un)employment office because their benefits have expired. One little suggestion for their trip abroad: visit the guy in Asia who now has your job. With a little effort, I'm sure you can get over the barbed wire topped steel mesh fence enclosing the factory's "attached employee housing compound" in Sichuan Province.

But luckiest of all are those American workers who get to have their cake and eat it too. According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an additional three million adults over age 25 have both jobs and unprecedented leisure time. These are the working Americans living on "unintentional part time employment." This term carries overtones of some sort of accidental consequence of something the worker did. As in: "Oops, silly me! I didn't realize that I cannot support a family on 17 hours work and $120 a week. So now I must spend all my newfound leisure time seeking more "unintentional underemployment." One must admire government speak for its subtlety. Intentional or not, these working folks are experiencing unprecedented new leisure time opportunities as Americans. Whoopee! Sleep in four mornings a week!

Depending on how you look at it, the American people are either freer, or simply getting better at what we have always represented to the world -- a bunch of powerless and unquestioning mental midgets. My money is on the latter.

Midgets can seldom see over the fence. Consequently, we see the world from inside the fence and on such small terms as paychecks and families, and no farther. We cannot identify even with a national level struggle for the same things we want, much less the global one for human dignity and fairness in labor. Exclusive devotion to family is the chief virtue here, along with maniacal devotion to closest football franchise. Moreover it's the only responsibility a man has, the sign of a good man, a real man. Accepting "personal responsibility" for the credit card bills. That one's personal responsibility might also extend to the larger world is incomprehensible.

Meanwhile union workers at downsized Sony and 3M plants in France hold CEOs hostage and threaten to burn down the factories, resulting in larger severance packages and raises for those not made redundant. That's the downside of mental midgetism, every fence is a tall fence. Knowing stuff is too much work. Then too, the fence was made quite a bit taller by the American media blackout of the French union action. I mean hell, J.T., those unions are communist!

My friends abroad tell me it is pitiful to watch such unquestioning bovine Americans. I tell them it isn't much fun to watch from the inside either.  Swamped in the manufactured spectacle, fear and distractions we call American culture, few among us notice what our nation has become -- a slickly packaged totalistic and authoritarian state of type new to history. That there has been any loss of self agency among the people is incomprehensible. Two subsequent generations to mine have never known what life once was in America. While not perfect, it was not so thoroughly policed and minutely administrated. For most now, present conditions are like the atmosphere or the weather. Just there. Just the way it is.

The condition among adolescents makes me want to cry. Passing through school metal detectors are a part of life. Being subjected to a piss test to join the chess club, or sniffed by a German shepherd police dog while being lined up against the lockers along with the rest of the student body? Paramilitary terrorist drills in high schools and middle schools? A kid being led out of study hall in handcuffs? Don't even think twice about it. It's just the way it is. And, if I may ask, exactly what is it? Well, one New York state school board calls it "Parental freedom from fear." The Columbine shootings provided the excuse to embed these things into society. Nine-eleven provided the authority to implement them anywhere and everywhere. So now it's just the way it is.

Given the nature of most of my writing and public speaking, I am more or less in the business of questioning authority in my own country, however modestly or meekly that may prove to be in the end. Yet, how individual Americans come to genuinely question authority on their own -- and a few millions of us do, or you would not be reading this -- remains a mystery to me. Apparently, each one arrives there by a different personal route. (Well, duh!) Just like I did.

But when we arrive, despite that there are many others like us, we find ourselves in relative isolation, even on the Internet which is supposed to be our great gathering ground. That there are over 140 million separated, self-focused blogs just may have something to do with it. Dispersed so thinly over this nation of 300 million, our voices are scarcely heard, except between one another and then mostly in atomized groups dealing with one issue.

There are the annual conferences of lefty bloggers, where everyone gets deliriously charged up at the sight of so many fellow political consciousness mutants, other people who get the picture. After that everyone returns to sculpting their indignant prose on company time, until the next big cyber-leftie shebang. Sometimes we see one of our Internet tribe acknowledged in the mainstream media as experts - but only those who are so damned non-threatening middle of the road safe and affluent as to be irrelevant. Arianna Huffington and Jane Hamsher spring to mind. Though Big Brother may well be watching, he ain't watching to see what Arianna is wearing.

Meanwhile, the capability of corpo-government entities to manage citizen behavior through technology, especially media technology, is greater than ever. Researchers study and government contracted companies manage what are known as "screen behaviors" toward what can only be called social control purposes. Just what are screen behaviors and how are they managed? To be frank, I can only verify one screen behavior from personal experience, and that one has to do with porn. It's hard to imagine a more interactive screen experience than that, yet they evidently exist. In any case, media technology, screen behavior, "online recreational outlets," video war gaming, they all have a chilling ring of social conditioning about them.

In a thoroughly conditioned and well managed capitalist consumer society the masses pay money to have their consciousness modified toward the economic ends of their elite managers. Take for instance, the wildly popular modern warfare video game, a murder simulator named "Call of Duty," a kill everything in sight game for the development of this Empire's military forces. The game reaches so deeply into the psyche that even clergymen find themselves in it. Brooklyn Rabbi Micah Kelber, wrote in The Jewish Daily Forward, "As a Jew the video game allows you to experience the closest thing possible to killing the sense of victimhood created by the Holocaust. In fact, it's so satisfying that when you get to shoot down the golden eagle on the Reichstag, while sniping head shots at flame-throwing Nazis, you simply don't want the war to end." The newest version features a Brit SAS commando and a U.S. Marine taking down enemies in both Russia and the Middle East. Shades of things to come? There is no government plot here. We simply carry our own hide to the tanner because we have been well conditioned to do so.

The U.S. Army uses high tech video games in its shopping mall recruitment centers. No one seems to find these "US Army Experience Centers" a bit strange, although in one instance at Philadelphia's Franklin Mall there was protest. If you can call it that. A group of masked protestors delivered a "symbolic complaint," in a brief and scripted "protest rally." They pre-designated a few persons among them to be arrested (for refusal to disperse). Delivering the arrestees to the police upon arrival, everybody then quietly left the mall. "It was a symbolic action," explained one of the protestors, who added, "Oh god, I'm not supposed to speak without permission of the group!" Protest in America sure ain't what it used to be. We used to burn shit down and fight back all the way to the paddy wagon.

The nature and purpose of any government is to control behavior, either for good or ill. Social management of some sort is necessary for peace, order and the general welfare. As a society becomes more complex, governments necessarily exert increasing control until they eventually reach authoritarianism. I did not conclude this. Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin did, except they called it tyranny. Same difference.

Flawed as history reveals those two founders to be, they nevertheless had time to think and then write about what they thought. Likewise their citizen constituency had time to consider what they wrote and how it consciously related to themselves as individuals in a political and economic environment. Entirely unassisted by screen behavior, they concluded that individual liberty was indeed a human right and checks and balances looked to be the best way of preserving that right.

Mother England may have birthed yeoman liberty centuries before 1776, but that geezer Ben, who spent as much time with his pants down as up, and Tom Jeff, who jollied it up with his black mistress even as he wrote laws that preserved black slavery, well, they were nevertheless onto something with this checks and balances thing. And the more citizens thought about it, the more they liked it. We've all been beneficiaries of the time they had to consider their political environment, then take right action during what we now consider simpler, less daunting times. But no times are simple to those living in them. Consider a bunch of farmers who bathed once a week or the yokel village shopkeepers -- who could well go bankrupt if they burned too many candles in a winter season -- taking on mighty England in warfare. I've read their musings and believe me, theirs was focused a focused and meditated decision.

But as American culture and society became more complex with more moving parts, it became more distracting. Decades ago we reached the point where the level of distraction was so high that few were capable of navigating it with enough individual consciousness intact to reflect upon, much less question the nature of our national environment. Like the rest of the planet, Americans mostly respond to the world as it is presented to them each day.

But the world as it is understood by Americans now comes through many layers of distorted filters, most of them purposefully distorted for economic financial gain by one overarching entity or another. So much so as to be atomized, kaleidoscopically diffracted. One cannot identify even the simplest object through a kaleidoscope. Bedazzled, disoriented and detached from reality, we are rendered effectively blind -- thus easily directed and managed. So we listen to the few loud voices to the many and disregard any dissent as background noise.

In fact, as the material, social and political complexities increased beyond our available time and ability to think about, or study and comprehend the larger order of things, we came to desire ever increasing control. The emerging authoritarian one voice to the many neatly solved this problem by answering the important question of our time: "Is anybody in charge here, for chrissake! I'm finding meth vials in my yard, homeless people are coming to my door asking for food or work, a friggin street gang just rented the house next door, and I can't get a customer service operator who speaks English. Who's in charge here?"

The one voice of government, answers, "I AM."

"Good then! Do what you gotta do. Make my decision for me. Because I haven't the slightest friggin idea of what's going on."

And decide it does. Just last month the government, by way of the highest court in the land, made a vitally important decision on behalf of the people of the United States. The Supreme Court ruled that public school officials cannot search the pubescent panties of a thirteen year old girl, on suspicion that she is in possession of Advil for menstrual cramps. (Sanford Unified School District vs. Savana Redding -- Case 08-479). Redding, an eighth grade honor student when the case began in 2001, was almost out of college when it was finally settled. It took six years and Christ only knows how much in legal costs to make this profound decision. The decision was hailed by progressives as "a landmark victory for personal freedom." One more new freedom for Americans. The right to stash an over-the-counter pill anywhere on your body you choose.

We find ourselves awash in new freedoms. There are those aforementioned 17 million folks freed from work. And at least 45 million people are free from the onus of healthcare and all those time consuming trips to the doctor or dentist. More than 60 million folks are freed from the rigors of financial planning because they now have zero net worth, thanks to the mortgage bust. More than a million are free from even having to decide when to eat, shower, take a crap or sleep -- because they are in the joint doing time, mostly for parole violations of some previous offense.

I've been around 62 years and I'm here to tell you that I've never seen such a deluge of freedom in my entire life. That's the foot stompin' truth. And I don't doubt for one minute that there aren't more freedoms coming down the pike. I can feel 'em in these old bones. I just might need a bump of Old Granddad to brace myself for the next one. Lordy, lordy, I just might.

Joe’s points apply to the entire developed world and the developing mind of Earth’s human species. Societies have blinkered and neutered their citizens to maintain a malleable workforce since those hoary, ill remembered yet advanced civilizations lost in the veiling mists of the last Ice Age. The domesticated primate template has been well established for millennia and the path toward true freedom has been occluded by endless torments, inexorable sufferings, dumb numbness and the simple modern dissolution of meaningless mesmerising distractions. The total centralised control of humankind may well appear to be approaching an ultimate culmination, even as we’re all undergoing some undreamt of apotheosis – along with the rest of long suffering Planet Earth – yet the best is yet to come. ‘Think of it as evolution in action.’

Specialisation has dumbed down and narrowed our once universally adept and flexible species and empires have enslaved and belittled their subjects to the point of ingrained servility, but those who aspire to be Renaissance men and women have never had a better chance or time in which to achieve hitherto unrealized potentials. The future isn’t what it used to be – but that can easily be viewed as a positive outcome, given the short-sighted perspectives of most potentates and control freaks throughout the ages. Stupid presidents, crazed prime ministers and other co-opted, one-eyed front men for the self-styled global elite are hardly a new contivance.

The travails and travesties now faced by all the far-flung tribes of the world are the results of our own actions, and those of our revered ancestors – who are, after all, fundamentally identical to we ‘moderns’, our own alter egos (if not actually we, ourselves) existing in another time and place.

We can achieve anything we set our hearts and minds to – for better and worse. The proof is all around us. Tinkering with the phenomena of the world like mindless dilettantes is a recipe for disaster, but the current paradigm is about to alter and a new understanding of ancient verities is dawning. A truer understanding of the nature of the universe, mind and self are awaiting discovery by a new curious generation of seekers, and pearls of extraordinary wisdom, transformative techniques and transcendent technologies abound all around.

Through our thoughts, minds and deeds we mould the mindstuff of potential into the world we and we, our descendents experience, yet the only real solutions lie within, beyond the surface realms of the simplistic navel-gazing we mistake for wordly enlightenment. There is no solution to be found inside the inherently locked-in limitations of language-dominated consciousness, but we all have access to a deeper reality. There is no past or future to the indwelling deity that resides at your truest core; the present is an ongoing eternity. The optimal present dwells in the centre of the cyclone, beyond the self-articulating mind of humankind; beyond the thinking monkey mind, at the universally shared source of all.

Goodbye wires - WiTricity

MIT team experimentally demonstrates wireless power transfer, potentially useful for powering laptops, cell phones without cords

Imagine a future in which wireless power transfer is feasible: cell phones, household robots, mp3 players, laptop computers and other portable electronics capable of charging themselves without ever being plugged in, freeing us from that final, ubiquitous power wire. Some of these devices might not even need their bulky batteries to operate.

A team from MIT's Department of Physics, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN) has experimentally demonstrated an important step toward accomplishing this vision of the future.

The team members are Andre Kurs, Aristeidis Karalis, Robert Moffatt, Prof. Peter Fisher, and Prof. John Joannopoulos (Francis Wright Davis Chair and director of ISN), led by Prof. Marin Soljacic.

Realizing their recent theoretical prediction, they were able to light a 60W light bulb from a power source seven feet (more than two meters) away; there was no physical connection between the source and the appliance. The MIT team refers to its concept as "WiTricity" (as in wireless electricity). The work will be reported in the June 7 issue of Science Express, the advance online publication of the journal Science.

Late-night beeps

The story starts one late night a few years ago, with Soljacic (pronounced Soul-ya-cheech) standing in his pajamas, staring at his cell phone on the kitchen counter. "It was probably the sixth time that month that I was awakened by my cell phone beeping to let me know that I had forgotten to charge it. It occurred to me that it would be so great if the thing took care of its own charging." To make this possible, one would have to have a way to transmit power wirelessly, so Soljacic started thinking about which physical phenomena could help make this wish a reality.

Radiation methods

Various methods of transmitting power wirelessly have been known for centuries. Perhaps the best known example is electromagnetic radiation, such as radio waves. While such radiation is excellent for wireless transmission of information, it is not feasible to use it for power transmission. Since radiation spreads in all directions, a vast majority of power would end up being wasted into free space.

One can envision using directed electromagnetic radiation, such as lasers, but this is not very practical and can even be dangerous. It requires an uninterrupted line of sight between the source and the device, as well as a sophisticated tracking mechanism when the device is mobile.

The key: Magnetically coupled resonance

In contrast, WiTricity is based on using coupled resonant objects. Two resonant objects of the same resonant frequency tend to exchange energy efficiently, while interacting weakly with extraneous off-resonant objects. A child on a swing is a good example of this. A swing is a type of mechanical resonance, so only when the child pumps her legs at the natural frequency of the swing is she able to impart substantial energy.

Another example involves acoustic resonances: Imagine a room with 100 identical wine glasses, each filled with wine up to a different level, so they all have different resonant frequencies. If an opera singer sings a sufficiently loud single note inside the room, a glass of the corresponding frequency might accumulate sufficient energy to even explode, while not influencing the other glasses. In any system of coupled resonators there often exists a so-called "strongly coupled" regime of operation. If one ensures to operate in that regime in a given system, the energy transfer can be very efficient.

While these considerations are universal, applying to all kinds of resonances (e.g., acoustic, mechanical, electromagnetic, etc.), the MIT team focused on one particular type: magnetically coupled resonators. The team explored a system of two electromagnetic resonators coupled mostly through their magnetic fields; they were able to identify the strongly coupled regime in this system, even when the distance between them was several times larger than the sizes of the resonant objects. This way, efficient power transfer was enabled.

Magnetic coupling is particularly suitable for everyday applications because most common materials interact only very weakly with magnetic fields, so interactions with extraneous environmental objects are suppressed even further. "The fact that magnetic fields interact so weakly with biological organisms is also important for safety considerations," Kurs, a graduate student in physics, points out.

The investigated design consists of two copper coils, each a self-resonant system. One of the coils, attached to the power source, is the sending unit. Instead of irradiating the environment with electromagnetic waves, it fills the space around it with a non-radiative magnetic field oscillating at MHz frequencies. The non-radiative field mediates the power exchange with the other coil (the receiving unit), which is specially designed to resonate with the field. The resonant nature of the process ensures the strong interaction between the sending unit and the receiving unit, while the interaction with the rest of the environment is weak.

Moffatt, an MIT undergraduate in physics, explains: "The crucial advantage of using the non-radiative field lies in the fact that most of the power not picked up by the receiving coil remains bound to the vicinity of the sending unit, instead of being radiated into the environment and lost." With such a design, power transfer has a limited range, and the range would be shorter for smaller-size receivers.

Still, for laptop-sized coils, power levels more than sufficient to run a laptop can be transferred over room-sized distances nearly omni-directionally and efficiently, irrespective of the geometry of the surrounding space, even when environmental objects completely obstruct the line-of-sight between the two coils. Fisher points out: "As long as the laptop is in a room equipped with a source of such wireless power, it would charge automatically, without having to be plugged in. In fact, it would not even need a battery to operate inside of such a room." In the long run, this could reduce our society's dependence on batteries, which are currently heavy and expensive.

At first glance, such a power transfer is reminiscent of relatively commonplace magnetic induction, such as is used in power transformers, which contain coils that transmit power to each other over very short distances. An electric current running in a sending coil induces another current in a receiving coil. The two coils are very close, but they do not touch. However, this behavior changes dramatically when the distance between the coils is increased. As Karalis, a graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science, points out, "Here is where the magic of the resonant coupling comes about. The usual non-resonant magnetic induction would be almost 1 million times less efficient in this particular system."

Old physics, new demand

WiTricity is rooted in such well-known laws of physics that it makes one wonder why no one thought of it before. "In the past, there was no great demand for such a system, so people did not have a strong motivation to look into it," points out Joannopoulos, adding, "Over the past several years, portable electronic devices, such as laptops, cell phones, iPods and even household robots have become widespread, all of which require batteries that need to be recharged often."

As for what the future holds, Soljacic adds, "Once, when my son was about three years old, we visited his grandparents' house. They had a 20-year-old phone and my son picked up the handset, asking, 'Dad, why is this phone attached with a cord to the wall?' That is the mindset of a child growing up in a wireless world. My best response was, 'It is strange and awkward, isn't it? Hopefully, we will be getting rid of some more wires, and also batteries, soon.'"

Twitter: The CIA is following you.

Recently reported by Wired Magazine, the CIA has secured a stake in Visible Technologies, which is is social media monitoring & information software company. Visible is currently working with Microsoft as they are interested in the instant social media information related to the release of their new Windows 7 operating system.

This new technology would give the CIA easy streaming access to keywords & information found on blogs, twitter, amazon and soon to be facebook status updates. The CIA will claim publicly that they are planning to use this technology to observe foreigners that are not US citizens and likely claim that they are only looking at those who seek to incite violence through the social media website.

However, I would wager a bet that the CIA will do more. Just like we never thought the CIA would be involved with torture, or that when we allowed the Patriot Act to be passed, we didn’t think the governmental agencies would use it to spy on people having phone sex or normal everyday conversations with family members.

Now, I have nothing to hide from the CIA, so I say bring them on. However, anyone who does not want the US government to spy on them is advised to either stop tweeting, blogging and facebooking or start utilizing the website’s privacy features that block outside access to your information. (This is also something you should do if you don’t want google, yahoo or Microsoft’s Bing search engines from reading your tweets and blogs.)

My challenge to the CIA is to actually find information that is credible, seek a warrant to search the content of the suspects computer & actually follow our federal laws laid out by the US Constitution. You have easily accessible information in front of you, do not go around the courts to get a “secret” warrant from a “secret” court because this violates my rights and anyone else’s rights.

US paid reward to Lockerbie witness, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi papers claim

Scottish detectives discussed secret payments of up to $3m made to witness and his brother, documents claim

Two key figures in the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber were secretly given rewards of up to $3m (£1.9m) in a deal discussed by Scottish detectives and the US government, according to legal papers released today.

The claims about the payments were revealed in a dossier of evidence that was intended to be used in an appeal by Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of murdering 270 people in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 in 1988.

Megrahi abandoned his appeal last month after the Libyan and Scottish governments struck a deal to free him on compassionate grounds because he is terminally ill with prostate cancer. Now in hospital in Tripoli, Megrahi said he wanted the public to see the evidence which he claims would have cleared him.

"I continue to protest my innocence – how could I fail to do so?," he said. "I have no desire to add to the upset of many people I know are profoundly affected by what happened in Lockerbie. My intention is only for the truth to be made known."

The documents published online by Megrahi's lawyers today show that the US Department of Justice (DoJ) was asked to pay $2m to Tony Gauci, the Maltese shopkeeper who gave crucial evidence at the trial suggesting that Megrahi had bought clothes later used in the suitcase that allegedly held the Lockerbie bomb.

The DoJ was also asked to pay a further $1m to his brother, Paul Gauci, who did not give evidence but played a major role in identifying the clothing and in "maintaining the resolve of his brother". The DoJ said their rewards could be increased and that the brothers were also eligible for the US witness protection programme, according to the documents.

The previously secret payments were uncovered by the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC), which returned Megrahi's conviction to the court of appeal in 2007 as a suspected miscarriage of justice. Many references were in private diaries kept by the detectives involved, Megrahi's lawyers said, but not their official notebooks.

The SCCRC was unable to establish exactly how much the brothers received under the DoJ's "reward-for-justice" programme but found it was after Megrahi's trial and his first appeal in 1992 was thrown out.

A memo written by "DI Dalgleish" to "ACC Graham" in 2007 confirms the men received "substantial payments from the American authorities".

The inspector claims the rewards were "engineered" after Megrahi's trial and appeal were over, but said there was "a real danger that if [the] SCCRC's statement of reasons is leaked to the media, Anthony Gauci could be portrayed as having given flawed evidence for financial reward." Instead, he claimed, the reward was intended to ensure the Gaucis could afford to leave Malta and start new lives "to avoid media and other unwanted attention".

However, the documents disclose that in 1989 the FBI told Dumfries and Galloway police that they wanted to offer Gauci "unlimited money" and $10,000 immediately. Gauci began talking of a possible reward in meetings with Dumfries and Galloway detectives in 1991, when a reward application was first made to the DoJ.

The evidence, which was due to be heard by the appeal court next month, also discloses that Gauci was visited 50 times by Scottish detectives before the trial and new testimony contradicting the prosecution's claims that Megrahi bought the clothes on 7 December 1988 – the only day he was in Malta during the critical period.

In 23 police interviews, Gauci gave contradictory evidence about who he believed bought the clothes, the person's age, appearance and the date of purchase. Two identification experts hired by Megrahi's appeal team said the police and prosecution breached the rules on witness interviews, using "suggestive" lines of questioning and allowing "irregular" identification line-ups.

Two new witnesses also disproved the prosecution claim that Megrahi was in Gauci's shop on 7 December, his lawyers said. Gauci said the area's Christmas lights were not on when the clothes were bought. The current Maltese high commissioner to the UK, Michael Rufalo, then the local MP, told the SCCRC the lights were switched on on 6 December, raising further inconsistencies in the prosecution case.

It has also emerged that Scottish police did not tell Megrahi's lawyers that another witness, David Wright, had seen two different Libyan men buying very similar clothes on a different day; evidence that psychologists believe may have confused Gauci and again clouded the prosecution case.

Dumfries and Galloway police said only a court could properly consider this material, and supported previous criticism of Megrahi's decision to release his appeal papers by Elish Angiolini, the lord advocate. "We will not be taking part in any discussion or debate concerning the selective publications made by Mr Megrahi," a statement said.

"We have nothing more to add other than to echo the lord advocate's recent comments pointing out that Mr Megrahi was convicted unanimously by three senior judges and his conviction was upheld unanimously by five judges, in an appeal court presided over by the lord justice general, Scotland's most senior judge. Mr Megrahi remains convicted of the worst terrorist atrocity in UK history."

A spokesman for the US Department of Justice also refused to comment, since Megrahi had voluntarily withdrawn his appeal. He said: "None of the allegations in the SCCRC referral, or the grounds of appeal filed by Megrahi, were finally adjudicated by the Scottish High Court of Justiary (the appropriate judicial forum) because Megrahi withdrew his appeal before the court could rule. Consequently, the U.S. Department of Justice will not comment further on his aborted appeal."

Extradition: Gary McKinnon is being sent to the U.S. and faces 60 years in jail

Boris Johnson has urged peers to vote today to change the law to prevent a repeat of the 'blunt and brutal' extradition of Gary McKinnon.

Tories and LibDems in the Lords are expected to support the introduction of an amendment which would prevent those who commit crimes in Britain being sent overseas to face trial.

Asperger's sufferer Gary, 43, is being sent to the U.S. under the controversial 2003 Extradition Act.

He faces 60 years in jail for hacking into computers from the bedroom of his North London flat to search for evidence of the existence of aliens.

London mayor Mr Johnson, who wrote to all peers last night, said: 'It is scandalous that under the current laws the UK has so little influence over extradition.

'There are a number of serious flaws in the Extradition Act in its current form. As we have seen with the case of Gary McKinnon

it can be a blunt and brutal law. Gary's appalling situation is just one high profile case we are aware of, but a number of other UK citizens are also in similar positions and are currently awaiting their fate.

'I urge the peers to take the wellbeing of the people of this country seriously and use this opportunity to change this cruel law.'

The introduction of the amendment has been delayed since 2006, when the Government approved the law but said it could only be enacted after a new vote. It has since frustrated attempts to hold such votes.

Gary is being backed by a Daily Mail campaign. LibDem home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne said yesterday: 'These amendments should have been enacted by the Government years ago but their craven attitude towards the United States has got in the way.

'It is only fair that people are tried here for crimes committed here unless a judge rules it is in the best interests of justice to extradite them.'

On Saturday Home Secretary Alan Johnson halted Gary's extradition process to examine new medical evidence about his psychiatric health. Experts have warned he could commit suicide.

The Government will oppose today's vote. A Home Office spokesman said the amendment 'would place the UK in breach of its international treaty obligations'.

SUPPORTERS of the autistic British computer hacker Gary McKinnon are rallying support for the man who is fighting extradition to the US to face federal charges for penetrating dozens of government computers.

His family and supporters are taking the case to the newly formed Supreme Court, which replaces the House of Lords as the highest appeal court in Britain. If that fails, they will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, a supporter said.

Sitting in his bedroom in north London shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Mr McKinnon exploited security problems in a variety of computer programs to tap into dozens of US government computers, including at NASA, the Pentagon and more than a dozen military installations in 14 states.

Paul McNulty, the then-US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, called it the ''the biggest hack of military computers ever detected''.

Mr McKinnon was indicted in Virginia and New Jersey in November 2002 on eight counts of computer fraud. He explained his actions by saying he was looking for UFOs. But he has yet to be brought to the US.

In February, British authorities refused to charge him or have the US charges heard in Britain. The Crown Prosecution Service said it would be best to prosecute Mr McKinnon in the US and that his actions were not ''random experiments'' but ''a deliberate effort to breach US defense systems at a critical time which caused well documented damage.''

Mr McKinnon has admitted to hacking into 97 US government computers between February 2001 and March 2002.

His supporters argue that he should not be extradited to face the US charges because he has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism that he was diagnosed with last year. They say the diagnosis explains his obsession with hacking.

Rather than being America's worst cyber-terrorist, his family says, he is a vulnerable eccentric who could become suicidal if removed from his family.

Religion poisons everything, but war makes hell on Earth

The new millennial anti-Islamic crusade is progressing apace. Throughout carefully massaged histories written by victors, regional conflicts and major wars have usually been caused by off-the-shelf lies and unconvincing fabrications. This is nothing new; most conflicts are wrought for ‘reasons’ utterly different to those provided to gullible populations of sporty team players and nationalistic ignoramuses.

Everyone knows the one-sided war in Iraq (truly a massacre of innocents, using overwhelming asymmetrical force) was based on so-called ‘sexed up’ intelligence reports. Who did the sexing up – the bald faced lying – that made this all possible? It was lying lawyer/politicians that you probably voted for. Everyone knows the leaders of the ‘free world’ lied to their own citizens as thoroughly as they misled all the other peoples of Earth.

Anyone with half a brain could see what was happening prior to the year 2000, when US Republicans lied and cheated their way back into the White House while the world watched aghast. They’d earlier publicly promised they’d do whatever it took to regain the reins of power - just as, bold as brass in the knowledge that no-one would hold them to account for their crimes, they announced in early 2001 that they’d henceforth be altering intelligence reports. Which is the party that the military perpetually backs and fills and votes for, after all? Who butters the warmongers’ bread – and who recalls that since the 1980s the US economy has been designed to run on war? Without war not only would Amerika fail to dominate the rest of the world, but its economy would immediately collapse. Despite apparent recent changes in voter patterns and in the general zeitgeist, the Bush dynasty of Emperor Georges I and II ended the promise of US democracy and snuffed out the light of liberty. But the writing’s been on the wall for decades.

Credible threats have been thin on the ground since World War Two, and ever since that time most large scale wars and minor military incursions have been based on incredible threats and outright lies. Since the 1970s (at least) ‘intelligence’ has filled the news with subtle and unsubtle prods encouraging Western people to see a war against Islam as inevitable - even as desirable to superstitious fools who think of religions as football teams. The same malefactors have twisted the minds of gullible people in the Islamic world, turning them into a formfitting complement of purblind brutalising warriors.

Defacto crusades can be made to last forever, spilling profits into the coffers of corporate warmongers as swiftly as they spill the blood of innocents into oil-tarred sands. They certainly did so the last time around, when the feudal monarchies of the world conspired in an endless centuries-long struggle to conquer a distant ‘holy land’ and murder any who stood in their way. Those who forget the lessons of history…

Killers for Christ

Everyone knows the Iraq war was based on a lie, and yet the fighting goes on and on and on – longer now than all the bloody years of World War One or Two. Everyone with a memory should recall that hawkish US warmongers planned to invade Afghanistan long before the fabricated emergency of 9/11. They should realise that the ‘Patriot Act’ had been prepared long before that false flag attack, readied to turn the land of the free into a terrified homeland free of the brave and bereft of regard for truth or honour.

It’s obvious now that Weapons of Mass Destruction were always a lie. Many thousands stood in the streets and denounced the lie even before the Long War began. All those intelligent farsighted protesters were derided as ‘unpatriotic’ and ‘cowardly’ and the juggernaut war rolled over millions of innocent people – millions of deaths which fed the maw of bestial corporate clowns in the corridors of power.

A CIA front organisation called ‘al Qaeda’ was stitched up with a crime committed by smiling politicians and their shadowy puppetmasters. Where is this deadly group of terrorists today? Right where they always were – they only exist in the imaginary world of Misters Fixit, the gunman Cheney and brutal Rumsfeld; selling news for Mister Murdoch, NBC, ABC and all the rest of the pile of lowest common denominator crud-sellers, who can’t understand why people won’t believe their lies as readily as they once did.

Has anyone in Amerika – or all their ‘allies’ in crimes against the Afghan people – noticed that the war is no longer against the fictitious al Qaeda, but someone else entirely - the indigenous Taliban? How could this happen, without anyone seeming to notice? Hasn’t anyone read 1984? Hasn’t anyone heard of the historical Great Game, or noted contemporary movents of billionaire-owned gas and oil through vulnerable pipelines in these unstable territories?

And the corporate liars and soap-sellers of the co-opted and mediated mass media have the hide to deride the independent commentators of the Internet. Oil’s ain’t oils and power is power; it’s almost as simple as that.

Meanwhile, the real perps have got away with mass murder as usual! They’re still raking in billions and trillions, laughing all the way to the banks they own as they suck the world dry. Look at oil, at cars and tanks, at GMO foods, nuclear power and weaponry, insecticides, patented lifeforms, bullets and guns; their filthy hands desecrate everything they touch. All substantial manufacturers and miners are owned and/or controlled by the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity, along with the Fortune 500 and any profitable company backed by self-blinding shareholders.

There’s no need to blame scapegoat Jews or the Sultan of Brunei - the pillars of your society are rotten to the core; all your heroes have feet of clay and foreign holiday homes stuffed with cash and servile slaves. They’re the same old barren-minded robber barons of yore, still dressing their corpulent corporate frames in silken cloth and gilded fripperies – and the peasants they own are still too stupid and preoccupied to notice they’re being fattened for slaughter. 

How could Amerikans – whose nation was forged in protest and revolt against distant murderers, tyrants who ruled with a sense of unending entitlement, stand by and allow this to happen to their country – and, because of this dereliction, to the entire world?

Long Time, Short Memory

All these events have been on the drawing board for a VERY LONG TIME. When I heard what was planned for the New Millennium back in the 1970s, the events of our era had already been plotted, believe it or not. Yet it seemed outlandish to expect educated populations to Fall for these age-old tricks, even if they’d still worked so well in the trumped-up Vietnamese phoney war. It seemed unlikely that an unending ‘crusading’ war wouldn’t be seen for what it was by the newly educated populations of wealthy nations – an endless money-making exercise in a new incarnation of the same old Royal Game.

It seemed unlikely that the world’s people would be blinded to the death of the planetary ecosystem and the rape of a dying world by the fog of manufactured wars; unlikely that they’d fail to see what was happening under their very noses, crimes committed by their own hands. Unlikely they’d allow the Nazis to take over again, or fail to recognise the same old wolves kitted out in the same old daggy wool.

It seemed foolish to believe that the broken-backed Nations of Islam could be conflated with a ‘credible threat’ that would ensure continual profits for power mongers – or that the ruined Temple of Solomon might eventually become an excuse to start World War Three and implement global control or genocidal policies of conquest; but believe it or not, this madness is still on the cards and the worst is probably yet to come, for the self-proclaimed King of the World desires to be crowned in an establishment befitting the ancient credentials of Rex Mundi.

I was obviously as naïve as all the war-loving dolts in Christendom and Islam.

If you keep people numb and dumb and ensure some or many fall through huge gaps in inadequate social safety nets as examples to the rest, the fearful mug punter will swallow pretty well anything – even tranquillising rat poison in their tapwater and biocides sprayed on their food. Anyone foolish enough to tell them they’re poisoning themselves and their kids will be derided or attacked. As we’ve seen throughout times past, most coopted football-worshipping proles will roll over and present their bellies or loins to grinning death’s head tyrants when real rightist Nazis take over their societies through guile and stealth. They’ll ignore what’s happening so long as it doesn’t happen to them (until it’s too late), blaming ‘socialists’ and ‘do-gooders’ for the demise of liberty while they cry out to unseeable sky gods to save them from themselves.

As I write, the second huge dust storm in as many weeks (supposedly a once-in-a-lifetime event) is coated my lungs with irreplaceable powdered soils, blown thousands of miles from a landscape desiccated by bare dirt farming and daft desperate cattle ranching on unsuitable land. The dust of ages flees to the seas and fertilises this surviving green fragment of a once global paradise, where I type on a solar-powered laptop. The radio news (this slice of paradise is thankfully too far out for TV) is full of meaningless daily financial weather reports and monetarist fluctuations while the real thing – the collapse of the world ecosystem - goes unreported; unprecedented earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, landslides, dust storms and even mass murder apparently pales to insignificance compared to a daily rote reading of uneconomical facts and temporary figures.

Even as I write, the apocalypse has already begun; the winds and tides will grow stronger and wilder and civilization will be swept away in a single human lifetime – and all people seem to want is someone (else) to blame for their predictable private woes. Unlikely as it seems, we can still turn it all around. But I’m just jaded enough to believe it probably won’t happen, because people are too selfish to give up a few minor luxuries, too greedy to stop working at soul-sucking jobs that destroy the planet.

They’d prefer their children die before their time, rather than plant a few trees and stand up to their boss, or stand in front of bulldozers that are killing the one true Mother of us all. They prefer to borrow irreplaceable time with plastic cards to buy useless crap from monstrous killers. They prefer to watch rigged corporate sport and dopey game shows, rather than stand up to be counted in the only struggle that really counts – the honourable quest to save the world, preserve the forests and animals and free the people from the unnecessary yokes of stock markets, murderous billionaires and the pervasive illusion of money.

Democracy has already been snuffed out, not just in Amerika but in most other nations and corporations. Time to resurrect it. That’s one real task facing us all, and a far easier job than the rehabilitation of the planet. How can the will of humankind be heard and acted upon in this Brave New Millennium? How can we salvage victory from the ashes of this woeful defeat of all that is good in our hearts and minds? How can we forget the religiously ingrained dreams of apocalyptic ruin and stupid mass death and replace these old superstitions with something more positive? How can we rise above the lies that our parents believed, and stuffed down our throats with fearful glances over hunched shoulders?

It’s the end of the world as we know it. We have to change our hearts or die. It’s as simple as that. It’s up to you. See you in paradise – a paradise on Earth! The other options aren’t worth considering, and besides; no-one will be allowed off the planet until they’ve cleaned up their mess!

How RFID Tags Could Be Used to Track Unsuspecting People

A privacy activist argues that the devices pose new security risks to those who carry them, often unwittingly

Radio-frequency identi­fication (RFID) tags are embedded in a growing number of personal items and identity documents.

Because the tags were designed to be powerful tracking devices and they typically incorporate little security, people wearing or carrying them are vulnerable to surreptitious surveillance and profiling.

Worldwide, legislators have done little to address those risks to citizens.

If you live in a state bordering Canada or Mexico, you may soon be given an opportunity to carry a very high tech item: a remotely readable driver’s license. Designed to identify U.S. citizens as they approach the nation’s borders, the cards are being promoted by the Department of Homeland Security as a way to save time and simplify border crossings. But if you care about your safety and privacy as much as convenience, you might want to think twice before signing up.

The new licenses come equipped with radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags that can be read right through a wallet, pocket or purse from as far away as 30 feet. Each tag incorporates a tiny microchip encoded with a unique identification number. As the bearer approaches a border station, radio energy broadcast by a reader device is picked up by an antenna connected to the chip, causing it to emit the ID number. By the time the license holder reaches the border agent, the number has already been fed into a Homeland Security database, and the traveler’s photograph and other details are displayed on the agent’s screen.

Although such “enhanced” driver’s licenses remain voluntary in the states that offer them, privacy and security experts are concerned that those who sign up for the cards are unaware of the risk: anyone with a readily available reader device—unscrupulous marketers, government agents, stalkers, thieves and just plain snoops—can also access the data on the licenses to remotely track people without their knowledge or consent. What is more, once the tag’s ID number is associated with an individual’s identity—for example, when the person carrying the license makes a credit-card transaction—the radio tag becomes a proxy for that individual. And the driver’s licenses are just the latest addition to a growing array of “tagged” items that consumers might be wearing or carrying around, such as transit and toll passes, office key cards, school IDs, “contactless” credit cards, clothing, phones and even groceries.

RFID tags have been likened to barcodes that broadcast their information, and the comparison is apt in the sense that the tiny devices have been used mainly for identifying parts and inventory, including cattle, as they make their way through supply chains. Instead of having to scan every individual item’s Universal Product Code (UPC), a warehouse worker can register the contents of an entire pallet of, say, paper towels by scanning the unique serial number encoded in the attached RFID tag. That number is associated in a central database with a detailed list of the pallet’s contents. But people are not paper products. During the past decade a shift toward embedding chips in individual consumer goods and, now, official identity documents has created a new set of privacy and security problems precisely because RFID is such a powerful tracking technology. Very little security is built into the tags themselves, and existing laws offer people scant protection from being surreptitiously tracked and profiled while living an increasingly tagged life.

Beyond Barcodes

The first radio tags identified military aircraft as friend or foe during World War II, but it was not until the late 1980s that similar tags became the basis of electronic toll-collection systems, such as E-ZPass along the East Coast. And in 1999 corporations began considering the tags’ potential for tracking millions of individual objects. In that year Procter & Gamble and Gillette (which have since merged to become the world’s largest consumer-product manufacturing company) formed a consortium with Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineers, called the Auto-ID Center, to develop RFID tags that would be small, efficient and cheap enough to eventually replace the UPC barcode on everyday consumer products.

By 2003 the group had developed a working version of the technology and attracted in­­vest­ment from more than 100 companies and government agencies. The tags’ promoters promised the tiny chips would revolutionize inventory management and counterfeiting prevention [see “RFID: A Key to Automating Everything,” by Roy Want; Scientific American, January 2004].

To kick-start government adoption of the technology, the General Services Administration (GSA), a federal bureau that manages purchasing for other government institutions, issued a memo in 2004 urging the heads of all federal agencies “to consider action that can be taken to advance the [RFID] industry.” Suddenly, virtually every agency, from the Social Security Administration to the Food and Drug Administration, began announcing RFID trials. 

During the same period, similar initiatives were under way around the world. In 2003 the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency that sets global passport standards, endorsed the use of RFID tags in passports. ICAO now calls for their use in all scannable “e-passports.” Today dozens of countries, including the U.S., issue e-passports with RFID tags embedded in their covers.

Since their debut, the new passports have been controversial on both privacy and security grounds. In a 2006 report one ICAO official promised that encryption measures would provide a “level of protection [that] should reassure the most anxious passport holder that his personal data cannot be read without his knowledge.”

Security experts quickly proved otherwise. In 2007 British security consultant Adam Laurie cracked the encryption code on a U.K. passport and “skimmed,” or remotely read, its personal information—while it was still sealed in its mailing envelope. Around the same time, German security consultant Lukas Grunwald copied the data from a German passport’s embedded chip and encoded it into a different RFID tag to create a forged document that could fool an electronic passport reader. Investigators at Charles University in Prague, finding similar vulnerabilities in Czech e-passports, wrote that it was “a bit surprising to meet an implementation that actually encourages rather than eliminates [security] attacks.”

Yet these demonstrated security problems have not slowed the adoption of RFID. On the contrary, the technology is being deployed for domestic ID cards around the world. Malaysia has issued some 25 million contactless national identity cards. Qatar is issuing one that stores the cardholder’s fingerprint in addition to personal information. And in what industry observers are calling the single largest RFID project in the world, the Chinese government is spending $6 billion to roll out RFID-based national IDs to nearly one billion citizens and residents.

There is an important difference, however, between other nations’ RFID-based ID cards and Homeland Security’s new driver’s licenses. Most countries’ contactless national IDs and e-passports have adopted an RFID tag that meets an industry standard known as ISO 14443, which was developed specifically for identification and payment cards and has a degree of security and privacy protection built in. In contrast, U.S. border cards use an RFID standard known as EPCglobal Gen 2, a technology that was designed to track products in warehouses, where the goal is not security but maximum ease of readability.

Whereas the ISO 14443 standard includes rudimentary encryption and requires tags to be close to a scanner to be read (a distance measured in inches rather than feet), Gen 2 tags typically have no encryption and only minimal data safeguards. To skim the data from an encrypted ISO 14443 chip, you have to crack the encryption code, but no special skills are required to skim a Gen 2 tag; all you need is any Gen 2 reader. Such readers can be purchased readily and are in common use in warehouses worldwide. A hacker or crim­inal armed with one could skim a border card through a purse, across a room, even through a wall.

As of this past April [2008], more than 35,000 Washington State motorists had signed up for en­­hanced driver’s licenses, and other border states, including Arizona, Michigan and Vermont, have agreed to participate in the program. New York State will begin making the new licenses available to its residents after Labor Day.

But the possibility that the security of such cards could be compromised is just one reason for concern. Even if tighter data-protection measures could someday prevent unauthorized access to RFID-card data, many privacy advocates worry that remotely readable identity documents could be abused by governments that wish to tightly monitor and control their citizens.

China’s national ID cards, for instance, are encoded with what most people would consider a shocking amount of personal information, including health and reproductive history, employment status, religion, ethnicity and even the name and phone number of each cardholder’s landlord. More ominous still, the cards are part of a larger project to blanket Chinese cities with state-of-the-art surveillance technologies. Michael Lin, a vice president for China Public Security Technology, a private company providing the RFID cards for the program, unflinchingly described them to the New York Times as “a way for the government to control the population in the future.” And even if other governments do not take advantage of the surveillance potential inherent in the new ID cards, ample evidence suggests that data-hungry corporations will.

Living a Tagged Life

If the idea that corporations might want to use RFID tags to spy on individuals sounds far-fetched, it is worth considering an IBM patent filed in 2001 and granted in 2006. The patent describes exactly how the cards can be used for tracking and profiling even if access to official databases is unavailable or strictly limited. Entitled “Identification and Tracking of Persons Using RFID-Tagged Items in Store Environments,” it chillingly details RFID’s potential for surveillance in a world where networked RFID readers called “person tracking units” would be incorporated virtually everywhere people go—in “shopping malls, airports, train stations, bus stations, elevators, trains, airplanes, restrooms, sports arenas, libraries, theaters, [and] mu­­se­­ums”—to closely monitor people’s movements.

According to the patent, here is how it would work in a retail environment: an “RFID tag scanner located [in the desired tracking location]... scans the RFID tags on [a] person.... As that person moves around the store, different RFID tag scanners located throughout the store can pick up radio signals from the RFID tags carried on that person and the movement of that person is tracked based on these detections.... The person tracking unit may keep records of different locations where the person has visited, as well as the visitation times.”

The fact that no personal data are stored in the RFID tag does not present a problem, IBM explains, because “the personal information will be obtained when the person uses his or her credit card, bank card, shopper card or the like.” The link between the unique RFID number of the tag and a person’s identity needs to be made only once for the card to serve as a proxy for the person thereafter. Although IBM envisioned tracking people via miniature tags in consumer goods, with today’s RFID border cards there is no need to wait for such individual product tags to become widespread. Washington’s new driver’s licenses would be ideally suited to the in-store tracking application, because they can already be read by Gen 2 inventory scanners in use today at stores such as Wal-Mart, Dillard’s and American Apparel.

A tracking infrastructure will become increasingly fruitful to marketers as more people begin carrying, and even wearing, RFID-tagged items. At present, tens of millions of contactless credit and ATM cards containing RFID tags are in circulation, along with millions of employee access badges. RFID-based public-transit passes, widely used in Europe and Japan, are also coming to U.S. cities. IBM’s person tracking unit is still only a patent, but an English amusement park called Alton Towers provides a living illustration of RFID’s tracking potential. On entering the park, each visitor is offered an RFID wristband encoded with a unique ID number. As people enjoy the attractions, a network of RFID readers placed strategically throughout the park detects each wristband as it comes within range and triggers nearby video cameras. Candid footage of each individual is stored in a file labeled with the wristband ID number, then made available to the customer on a keepsake DVD at the end of the day.

If RFID tags can enable an amusement park to capture detailed, personalized videos of thousands of people a day, imagine what a determined government could do—not to mention marketers or criminals. That is why my colleagues in the privacy community and I have so firmly opposed the use of RFID in government-issued identity documents or individual consumer items. As far back as 2003, my organization, CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering)—along with the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union, and 40 other leading privacy and civil liberties advocates and organizations—recognized this threat and issued a position paper that condemned the tracking of human beings with RFID as inappropriate.

In response to these concerns, dozens of U.S. states have introduced RFID consumer-protection bills—which have all been either killed or gutted by heavy opposition from lobbyists for the RFID industry. When the New Hampshire Senate voted on a bill that would have imposed tough regulations on RFID in 2006, a last-minute floor amendment replaced it with a two-year study instead. (I was appointed by the governor to serve on the resulting commission.) That same year a California bill that would have prohibited the use of RFID in government-issued documents passed both houses of the legislature, only to be vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

On the federal level, no high-profile consumer-protection bills related to RFID have been passed. Instead, in 2005, the Senate Republican High Tech Task Force praised RFID applications as “exciting new technologies” with “tremendous promise for our economy” and vowed to protect RFID from regulation or legislation.

In the European Union, regulators are at least examining the situation. The European Commission—the executive arm of the E.U.—has acknowledged the potential for serious privacy problems with RFID and opened a public comment period earlier this year. As of July, when this issue went to press, recommendations stemming from the public comments were set to be released later in the summer, but expectations for any consumer-privacy regulations were low. In a March 2007 speech, E.U. commissioner for information society and media Viviane Reding announced that the commission would not regulate RFID but instead would allow businesses to regulate themselves. “I am here to tell you that on RFIDs, there is not going to be a regulation,” she said. “My view is that we should underregulate rather than overregulate so that this sector can take off.”

Unfortunately, industry self-regulation has little force when it comes to protecting the public from RFID risks. EPCglobal, the industry body that now sets technical standards for RFID tags, also produced a set of guidelines for the use of the chips in retail. The organization’s recommendations require, among other things, notice to consumers whenever products contain RFID tags—for instance, in the form of a recognizable RFID logo. Yet when Checkpoint Systems, a member company of EPCglobal, designed RFID tags to be hidden in the soles of shoes—in clear violation of the organization’s own provisions — Mike Meranda, then president of EPCglobal, told me that since the guidelines were voluntary, there was nothing he or his organization could do about it.

The Washington State Department of Licensing reassures citizens that their personal information is safe because the RFID tag in an enhanced driver’s license “doesn’t have a power source” and “doesn’t contain any personal identifying inform­ation”—even though those facts have no bearing on whether the card can be used for tracking. For some people, a false sense of assurance provided by such official mollifications could be dangerous. The National Network to End Domestic Violence, a group that vocally opposes the use of RFID in identity documents and consumer products, has submitted legislative testimony describing how abusers could use the technology to stalk and monitor their victims.

Meanwhile the RFID train is barreling forward. Gigi Zenk, a spokesperson at Washington’s licensing agency, recently confirmed that there are 10,000 enhanced licenses “on the street now—that people are actually carrying.” That’s a lot of potential for abuse, and it will only grow. The state recently mustered a halfhearted response, passing a law that designates the unauthorized reading of a tag “for the purpose of fraud, identity theft, or for any other illegal purpose” as a class C felony, subject to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Nowhere in the law does it say, however, that scanning for other purposes such as marketing—or perhaps “to control the population”—is prohibited. We ignore these risks at our peril.

The Development of German UFOs Before World War 2

The Vril-Gesellschaft or

"Not All Good Comes from Above"

The VRIL-GESELLSCHAFT (VRIL Society) is one of the most interesting secret societies that ever existed.  In Germany there is not a single book, or indeed any material, to be found that would show up an organization of this name, the Allies successfully removed it all. But not all the material has actually disappeared.

In 1919 Karl Haushofer founded a second order, the "BRÜDER DES LICHTS" (Brothers of the Light) that later was renamed "VRIL-GESELLSCHAF". In this were united the new Templar order "DIE HERREN VOM SCHWARZEN STEIN" (DHvSS, The Lords of the Black Stone) that emerged  in 1917 from the Teutonic Order, and the "SCHWARZE RITTER" (Black Knights) of the Thule and SS elite "SCHWARZE SONNE" (Black Sun).

In comparing the THULE and the VRIL-GESELLSCHAFTEN, it is easiest to say that the Thule-Gesellschaft dealt with material and political interests, while the Vril-Gesellschaft was more oriented towards the ‘other side’. But they shared many concepts, like [a belief in] Atlantis, Thule, the basic connection between the Teutons and Mesopotamia, and also the old sacred places like the "Externsteine" (external stones) or the Hausberg at Stronegg were areas of common research.

Cosmic communication through mediums

In December 1919 a small circle of people from the Thule, the Vril and the DHvSS met in a specially rented forester's lodge near Berchtesgaden (Germany). They were accompanied by the medium Maria Orsic and another medium only known as Sigrun. Maria had mediumistically received transmissions in a secret Templar script - a language unknown to her - with the technical data for the construction of a flying machine. According to Vril documents these telepathic messages came from the solar system Aldebaran which is sixty-eight light-years away in the constellation Taurus.

Here is a short summary of the messages the Vril mediums had received over the years and which formed the basis for all further actions by the Vril-Gesellschaft:

The solar system Aldebaran has a sun around which revolve two inhabited planets that form the empire "SUMERAN". The population of the Aldebaran system is divided into the master race of "light God people" (Aryans) and several other human races that had developed by negative mutation from the "God people" because of climatic changes upon the planets. The coloured mutant races are apparently on a lower stage of spiritual development.

The more the races intermixed, the lower the spiritual development of these peoples sank, which led to the situation that when the sun Aldebaran began expanding they could no longer maintain the space travel technology of their forefathers and could not leave the planets by their own means. The lower races, totally dependant upon the master race, had to be evacuated and were brought to other inhabitable planets. Despite their difference all the races respected one another and did not interfere with each other, neither the so-called God people nor the so-called lower races. Each respected that the others just developments on their own (in contrast to what happens on Earth).

Around 500 million years ago the "light God people" started to colonize other Earth-like planets, after the expansion of the sun Aldebaran and the resulting heat had made the original planets uninhabitable. It is said that in our system they first colonized the planet Mallona (also called Maldek, Marduk or - by the Russians - Phaeton) which existed in the area of today's asteroid belt, then between Mars and Jupiter. Mars was next.

Evidence for a highly developed race on Mars is the well-known face on Mars and the pyramid city which has been photographed by the Mars probe Viking in 1976. It is assumed that the master race of Sumeran-Aldebaran then also came to Earth for a first visit, witnessed by the petrified impression of a shoe found to be about 500 million years old, and squashed under the heel a trilobite, a little crayfish that lived then upon Earth and became extinct about 400 million years ago.

The Vril people thought that later, when Earth became slowly habitable, the race of the Aldebarans landed in Mesopotamia and formed the master caste of the SUMERIANS which were described as fair, white God people. The Vril telepaths also found that the Sumerian language was not only identical with that of the Aldebarans, but also sounds like unintelligible German and that the language frequency of German and Sumerian-Aldebaranian were almost identical.

We cannot know whether these statements about Aldebaran were based on facts, but the construction plans and the technical details that the Vril telepaths received - wherever they came from - were so accurate that they led to the most fantastic idea men ever begot: the construction of a "Jenseitsflugmaschine", a "flying machine for the other side"!

The concept of an "alternative science" emerged (today one would say "alternative energy forms"), but they only started work on the project three years later.

During this early phase of alternative science a Dr. W. O. Schumann of the Technical University in Munich, both a Thule and a Vril member, made a speech, a section of which is reproduced here:

In everything we recognize two principles that determine events: light and darkness, good and evil, creation and destruction - as in electricity we have positive and negative. It is always either/or.

These two principles - the creative and the destructive - also determine our technical means...

Everything destructive is of Satanic origin, everything creative is divine... Every technology based upon explosion or combustion has thus to be called Satanic. The coming new age will be an age of a new, positive, divine technology!...

- (from the German SS secret archives).

At the same time the scientist VIKTOR SCHAUBERGER worked on a similar project. Johannes Kepler, whose ideas Schauberger followed, had knowledge of the secret teachings of Pythagoras that had been adopted and kept secret by the KNIGHTS TEMPLAR. It was the knowledge of IMPLOSION (in this case the utilization of the potential of the inner worlds in the outer world). Hitler knew - as did the Thule and Vril people - that the divine principle was always constructive.

A technology that is based on explosion, however, and is therefore destructive runs against the divine principle. Thus they wanted to create a technology based on IMPLOSION. Schauberger's theory of oscillation (principle of the overtone sequence, the monochord) takes up the knowledge of implosion. To put it simply: IMPLOSION instead of EXPLOSION!

Following the energy paths of the monochord and implosion technology one reaches the realm of antimatter and thus the cancellation of gravity.

Saucer-shaped flying machines

In the summer of 1922 the first saucer-shaped flying machine was built whose drive was based on implosion (the "other side flying machine"). It had a disk eight metres across with a second disk with a diameter of six and a half metres above and a third disk of seven metres diameter below. These three disks had a hole at the centre of 1.8 metres across in which the drive, which was two meters and forty centimetres high, was mounted. At the bottom the central body was cone-shaped, and there a pendulum reaching the cellar was hung that served for stabilisation. In the activated state the top and bottom disk revolved in opposing directions to build up an electromagnetic rotating field.

The performance of this first flying disk is not known. But experiments were carried out with it for two years before it was dismantled and probably stored in the Augsburg works of Messerschmidt. In the books of several German industrial companies entries under the codename "JFM" (for Jenseitsflugmaschine) can be found that show payments towards financing this work. Certainly the VRIL DRIVE (formally called "Schumann SM-Levitator") emerged from this machine.

In principle the "other side flying machine" should create an extremely strong field around itself extending somewhat into its surroundings which would render the space thus enclosed including the machine a microcosm absolutely independent of the earthbound space. At maximum strength this field would be independent of all surrounding universal forces - like gravitation, electromagnetism, radiation and matter of any kind - and could therefore manoeuvre within a gravitational or any other field at will, without acceleration forces being effective or perceptible.

In June 1934 VIKTOR SCHAUBERGER was invited by HITLER and the highest representatives of the Thule and Vril societies, and from then on worked with them.

After the initial failure, the first so-called German UFO also appeared in June 1934. Under the leadership of Dr. W. O. Schumann the first experimental round flying machine, the RFZ 1 (Rundflugzeug 1) was developed on the grounds of the aircraft factory Arado in Brandenburg. In its first and only flight it rose vertically to around 60 metres, then wobbled and danced in the air for minutes. The Arado 196 guiding system was utterly useless. The pilot Lothar Waiz just managed to somehow bring it down to the ground, jump out and run away before it began to act like a spinning top, turned over and literally ripped to pieces. That was the end of the RFZ 1, but the beginning of the VRIL flying machines.

Before the end of 1934 the RFZ 2 was ready, with a Vril drive and a "magnetic field impulse steering unit". It had a diameter of five metres and the following flying characteristics: With rising speed the visible contours became blurred and the craft showed the colours typical for UFOs: depending on the drive setting; red, orange, yellow, green, white, blue or purple. It worked - and it met with a remarkable destiny in 1941, during the "Battle of Britain", when it was used as transatlantic reconnaissance craft, because the German standard fighters, ME 109s, had an insufficient range for these flights.

By the end of 1941 it was photographed over the southern Atlantic on its way to the German cruiser Atlantis in Antarctic waters. It could not be used as a fighter though. The impulse steering allowed only changes of direction at 90gr, 45gr or 22.50 gr, which is exactly the right-angled flying pattern associated with and typical of UFOs today!

After the success of the small RFZ 2 as a distant reconnoitre craft the Vril Gesellschaft got its own test area in Brandenburg. By the end of 1942 the lightly armed 'VRIL-1-Jäger" (VRIL-1 fighter) was airborne. It measured 11.5 metres across, carried one person, had a "Schumann-Levitator" drive and a "magnetic field impulse steering unit". It reached speeds of 2,900 to 12,000 km/h, could change direction at a right angle at full speed without affecting the pilot, could fly in any weather and had a 100% space capability. Seventeen VRIL-1's were built and some versions had two seats and glass domes.

Also during this time another project was worked on - the V-7. Several disks were built under this code, but with conventional jet engines. ANDREAS EPP had designed a combination of levitating disk and jet propulsion, the RFZ 7. The design groups SCHRIEVER-HABERMOHL and MIETHE-BELLUZO worked on it. The RFZ 7 had a diameter of forty-two metres, but it crashed on landing at Spitzbergen. A second craft was later photographed outside Prague. According to Andreas Epp this craft was to be armed with nuclear warheads to attack New York.

In July 1941 SCHRIEVER and HABERMOHL built a round vertical take-off craft with jet propulsion, but it had severe shortcomings. They went on to develop an "electro-gravitational flying gyro" with a "tachyon drive" which proved more successful. Then Schriever, Habermohl and Belluzo built the RFZ 7 T that was fully functional. The V-7 flying disks however were mere toys compared to the Vril and Haunebu disks.

Within the SS there was a group studying alternative energy, the SS-E-IV (Development Group IV of the Black Sun) whose main task was to render Germany independent of foreign oil. The SS-E-IV developed from the existing Vril drives and the tachyon converter of Captain Hans Coler the "THULE DRIVE" which later was called the "THULE TACHYONATOR".

In August 1939 the first RFZ 5 took off. It was an armed flying gyro with the odd name "HAUNEBU I". It was twenty-five metres across and carried a crew of eight. At first it reached a speed of 4,800 km/h, later up to 17,000 km/h. It was equipped with two 6 cm KSK ("Kraftstrahlkanonen", power ray guns) in revolving towers and four machine guns. It had a 60% space capability.

By the end of 1942 the HAUNEBU II was ready. The diameters varied from twenty-six to thirty-two metres and their height from nine to eleven metres. They carried between nine and twenty people, had a Thule Tachyonator drive and near the ground reached a speed of 6,000 km/h. It could fly in space and had a range of fifty-five flying hours.

At this time there already existed plans for a large-capacity craft, the VRIL 7 with a diameter of 120m. A short while later the HAUNEBU III, the showpiece of all disks, was ready, at seventy-one meters across. It was filmed flying. It could transport thirty-two men could remain airborne for eight weeks and reached at least 7,000 km/h (according to documents in the secret SS archives up to 40,000 km/h).

Virgil Armstrong, former CIA member and Green Beret, writes about German flying machines during World War Two that could take off and land vertically and fly at right angles. They were measured at 3,000 km/h and had a laser weapon (probably the so-called KSK power ray gun) that could pierce four inch armour.

Professor J. Hurtak, ufologist and author of "The Keys of Enoch" writes that the Germans were in the process of building what the Allies called "the wonder weapon system". Hurtak received protocols that described two events:

1. The erection of a space city at Peenemünde and

2. The enlistment and transport to the U.S. of the best technicians and scientists from Germany.

He also mentions the meticulous examination of the so-called "FOO FIGHTERS"  The CIA and the British secret service already knew about the construction and the use of these flying objects in 1942, but they were off the mark in their evaluations. ‘Foo fighters’ was the Allies' name for all glowing German flying machines. There were probably two inventions that actually corresponded to the term foo fighters: the Flying Turtle and the Soap Bubble - two completely different objects that the Allies held for one.

The FLYING TURTLE was developed by the SS-E-IV at Vienna-Neustadt. Its outer shape recalled the shell of a turtle. They were unmanned probes that could cause disruption in the electric ignition systems of the enemy. They carried advanced "Klystronröhren" (clystron tubes) that the SS called death rays. The ignition disrupter did not work perfectly at the outset; later follow-up versions did, however, and the ufologists will confirm that disruption of ignition. The cutting of electrical power to equipment is a typical sign when a UFO is near.

Wendelle C. Stevens, U.S. Air Force pilot during the Second World War, describes the foo fighters as sometimes grey-green, or red-orange; they approached his aircraft to within about five metres and then stayed there. They could not be shaken off nor shot down and they often caused squadrons to turn back or land.

The SOAP BUBBLES that were also called foo fighters were something completely different. They were simple balloons in which projected metal spirals that disturbed enemy radar. Their success was probably very limited, disregarding the psychological effect.

At the beginning of 1943 a cigar-shaped mother ship was planned to be build in the Zeppelin works. The ANDROMEDA DEVICE, at a length of 139m, could transport several saucer-shaped craft in its body for flights of long duration (interstellar flights).

By Christmas 1943 an important meeting of the VRIL-GESELLSCHAFT took place at the seaside resort of Kolberg. The two mediums Maria Ortic and Sigrun attended. The main item on the agenda was the ALDEBARAN PROJECT. The mediums had received precise information about the habitable planets around the sun Aldebaran and one began to plan a trip there.

At a January 22, 1944 meeting between Hitler; Himmler, Kunkel (of the Vril Society) and Dr. Schumann this project was discussed. It was planned to send the VRIL 7 large-capacity craft through a dimension channel independent of the speed of light to Aldebaran. According to Ratthofer a first test flight in the dimension channel took place in the winter of 1944. It barely avoided disaster, for photographs show the Vril 7 after the flight looking "as if it had been flying for a hundred years". The outer skin looked ‘aged’ and was damaged in several places.

On February 14, 1944, a supersonic helicopter - constructed by Schriever and Habermohl under the V 7 project - that was equipped with twelve turbo-units BMW 028 was flown by the test pilot Joachim Röhlike at Peenemünde. The vertical rate of ascent was 800 metres per minute, it reached a height of 24,200 metres and in horizontal flight a speed of 2,200 km/h. It could also be driven with unconventional energy. But the helicopter never saw action since Peenemünde was bombed in 1944 and the subsequent move to Prague didn't work out either, because the Americans and the Russians occupied Prague before the flying machines were ready again.

In the secret archives of the SS, the British and the Americans discovered photographs of the Haunebu II and the Vril I crafts as well as shots of the Andromeda device during the occupation of Germany at the beginning of 1945. Due to President Truman's decision in March 1946 the war fleet command of the U.S. gave permission to collect material regarding the German high technology experiments. Under Operation PAPERCLIP German scientists who had worked in secret were brought to the U.S. privately, among them Victor Schauberger and Werhner Von Braun.

A short summary of the developments that were meant to be produced in series:

The first project was led by Prof. Dr. mg. W. O. Schumann of the Technical University Munich. Under his guidance seventeen disk-shaped flying machines with a diameter of 11.5 m were built, the so-called VRIL-1-Jäger (Vril-1 fighters), that made 84 test flights. At least one VRIL-7 and one VRIL-7 large capacity craft apparently started from Brandenburg - after the whole test area had been blown up - towards Aldebaran with some of the Vril scientists and Vril lodge members.

The second project was run by the SS-W development group. Until the beginning of 1945 they had three different sizes of bell-shaped space gyros built:

The Haunebu I, 25m diameter: two machines were built that made 52 test flights (speed ca. 4,800 km/h).

The Haunebu II, 32m diameter: seven machines built that made 106 test flights (speed ca. 6,000 km/h). The Haunebu II was already planned for series production. Tenders were requested from the Dornier and Junkers aircraft manufacturers, and at the end of March 1945 the decision was made in favour of Dornier. The official name for the heavy craft was to be DO-STRA (DOrnier STRAtospehric craft).

The Haunebu III, 71m diameter: only one machine built that made at least 19 test flights (speed ca. 7,000 km/h).

The Andromeda Device existed on the drawing board; it was 139m long and had hangars for one Haunebu II, two Vril I's and two Vril II's.

There are documents showing that the VRIL 7 large capacity craft has started for secret earth-bound missions after it was finished and test flown by the end of 1944:

1. A landing at the Mondsee in the Salzkammergut in Austria, with dives to test the pressure resistance of the hull.

2. Probably in March and April 1945 the VRIL 7 was stationed in the "Alpenfestung" {Alpine Fortress} for security and strategic reasons, from whence it flew to Spain to get important personalities who had fled there to South America and "Neuschwabenland"  [the NAZI-claimed Antarctic territory] safely, and to the secret German bases erected there during the war.

3. Immediately after this the VRIL 7 is said to have started on a secret flight to Japan about which nothing further is known however.

What happened to these flying machines after the war?

It cannot be excluded that a small series of the Haunebu II might have been built. The several photographs of UFOs that emerged after 1945 with the typical features of these German constructions suggest as much.

Some say that some of them had been sunk into the Austrian Mondsee, others maintain that they were flown to South America or brought there in parts. It is certain, however, that if the craft didn't get to South America, the plans that allowed for new ones to be built and flown [were sent] there, for an important part had been used in 1983 in the "Phoenix Project", the follow-on project of the 1943 "Philadelphia Experiment". This was a teleportation, materialization and time travel experiment of the U.S. Navy.

In 1938 a German expedition to the Antarctic was made with the aircraft carrier Schwabenland (Swabia). 600,000 km² of ice-free areas with lakes and mountains were declared German territory, the "Neuschwabenland" (New Swabia). Whole fleets of submarines of the 21 and 23 series later headed towards Neuschwabenland.

Today about one hundred German submarines are still unaccounted for, some equipped with the Walter Schnorkel, a device that allowed them to stay submerged for several weeks, and it can be assumed that they fled to Neuschwabenland with the dismantled flying disks or at least the construction plans. Again it must be assumed that since the test flights had been very successful some so-called flying saucers have flown there directly at the end of the war.

Perhaps some may think these assumptions to be a bit on the daring side, but there are strong indications that this may well have occurred. (For example the video-production UFO-SECRETS OF THE THIRD REICH which so clearly reveals the story. Why is this production never shown in our traditional TV stations?? Because it shows the whole secret - and why the Americans had to secure this information after WW2 to increase of their own of power and to PREVENT THIS INFORMATION FROM COM
